Local Area

Loch Morar Morar is a small Highland village and crofting community with a population of around 250. It lies just south of Mallaig on the west coast of Scotland on the Road to the Isles.

The area has stunning scenery and beautiful beaches: the famous Silver Sands of Morar. It has provided locations for films such as Local Hero and Rob Roy. Loch Morar is the deepest freshwater loch and Morar River the shortest mainland river in Britain.

There are many walks and interests for tourists to enjoy. In the summer months The Jacobite steam train runs between Fort William and Mallaig (a line familiar from the Harry Potter films) and passes through the village, evoking the romance of former times.

Loch Morar Unfortunately Morar has lost its village hall, shop and post office and there is no place for people to meet.

It has a Games Field belonging to both Morar and Mallaig which annually holds their Highland Games and other sports events. However, it cannot be used to its full potential as there are no changing rooms or toilet facilities.

The Trust’s main project at present is to erect a pavilion adjacent to the Games Field. This community building will provide changing facilities for sporting and other events, public toilets and visitor information in a display/gallery area.

The building will also contain a club room / meeting space, providing a hub for the community.
